Underground women's state, a documentary by Anna Zdrojewska and Claudia Snochowska- González.

They are called Grupa Filmowa Entuzjastki and are based in Poland. The duo, Anna Zdrojewska and Claudia Snochowska-González, have created an emotionally strong film about abortion in their home country. Underground women's state shows a series of interviews which reveals the difficulties and fear that eighty to twenty thousand women have to go through each year in Poland due to illegal abortion.

But there is more to this documentary than abortion. It is about politics and women’s rights in general. Ania explains, “We hope people will question and criticize politicians views on this topic and also remember how negative the Catholic Church has been towards these women.

Except for the dutch organisation Mama Cash, no other sponsors showed interest in this film. Needless to say that support from public television was out of question. As for medical research on the abortion process, well, even the medical team turned down to help us bring forth document. They preferred to remain anonymous. One wonders if the medical teams carrying out abortions are in favour of women’s rights or if they do the job for the big money they make from it. However, we must take into consideration the fact that in Poland it is not the women who are prosecuted for abortion, it is the doctors.

Grupa Filmowa Entuzjastki aims to speak out loud sensitive topics on human rights, women’s rights. Although one of the screenings of Underground women's state experienced opposition and demonstration, Claudia and Anna have no worries about continuing their work. Their knowledge of film, such as working for Polish Television and festivals, has surely taught them face and cope obstacles.
